IN today’s world, creative play is increasingly diminished as an
activity for many children. Busy lives, soccer practice, computers and rising academic standards have all contributed to
the “over-scheduled” child. But just imagine what happens at MY
Museum!
MY
Museum is a place that engages children’s thinking and guides inquiring minds to explore Science &
Nature, Art & Music, Community Occupations and the Local Culture & Environment while enhancing
self-esteem and encouraging the tremendous potential of every child.
MY Museum incorporates “how things work” through technology-oriented and hands-on exhibits, but it is
much more. Children can build, create, become artists, gain experience about what people do at work,
learn about science and technology, and even “cook a pizza.” In short, children learn by doing
everyday activities, at whatever pace works for them.
Just open the doors to MY Museum’s “Build A House” exhibit, for example, each child approaches a task
in his/her own unique way. Some may organize others to fix the pipes, while other children tackle
problems by counting, organizing and creating a scene out of blocks, canvas and plastic pipes.
No child or family of need has ever been refused entrance to the museum for lack of admission fee.
WE’RE PROUDLY “BUILDING A PLACE TO DISCOVER”
FOR ALL OF OUR CHILDREN AND THE ADULTS IN THEIR LIVES!
ALL children eventually have to move out of Mom and Dad’s garage and get a place of their own, and MY
Museum is no exception.
For the past six years, MY Museum has been tucked away in Monterey’s Wave Street parking garage near
Cannery Row – without stroller access or even a bathroom in the museum! However, in just six years
this exciting museum has served over 120,000 children, their parents and grandparents from Monterey
County and beyond, as well as another 80,000 children through outreach efforts. But, our lease has
expired and MY Museum must move.
HERE’S THE GOOD NEWS.
MY Museum’s new, permanent home is an 8,500 square foot building located at 425 Washington Street in
Monterey, right in the heart of family and visitor-centered attractions such as the Monterey Sports
Center, City baseball fields and tennis courts, Dennis the Menace Park, Monterey Conference Center,
Wharf attractions and Farmer’s Market.
There’s parking, support from City and County agencies and a strong Leadership Cabinet – all that’s
needed now are the funds to pay off the mortgage and enlarge the exciting, “please touch” exhibits!
